Renovated Kominka in Kameoka, Kyoto with Panoramic Mountain Views
Significant attention was paid to foundational improvements often unseen. To ensure long-term durability and prevent future issues, the entire subfloor area was treated with a moisture-proof sheet, followed by a concrete pour and an application of Rimonaite for termite protection. The exterior was also fully renovated, with the yellowish walls repainted white for a brighter atmosphere and the roof tiles completely re-laid.
The interior layout was reconfigured into a spacious 9LDK. Two adjacent traditional Japanese rooms were remodeled, with the front room converted into a Western-style room for versatile use and the rear room kept as a tatami room, featuring antique sliding doors. The heart of the home is a vast 32-tatami mat living-dining-kitchen (LDK) area created by removing walls between several rooms, providing an open, liberating space. The outdated kitchen was replaced with a modern system kitchen, and the previously dark, separate bathhouse was relocated into the main building and upgraded to a sleek, monochrome unit bath.
Located in the scenic Kameoka Basin, the area is known for its stunning natural beauty and is often called the "Gateway to Tamba." An interesting local fact is that Kameoka is the starting point for the Hozugawa Kudari, a famous and thrilling boat ride down the Hozu River to Arashiyama in Kyoto City, a tradition dating back over 400 years. The closest major landmark is the iconic Kinkaku-ji Temple (the Golden Pavilion), a UNESCO World Heritage site located a short drive away in northwest Kyoto City.
