Renovated Traditional Japanese Home in Hida City's Kamioka District
This property is a beautifully renovated traditional Japanese house located in the Kamioka district of Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. The renovation was carried out by Mizoguchi Construction, focusing on preserving and highlighting the home's classic character while updating it for modern two-family living. The project involved creating a second living area on the second floor, complete with a mini-kitchen, toilet, living room, and bedroom.
A key feature of the home is the large, traditional cow beam (牛梁) in the attic space, which was exposed and finished as a decorative beam. The contrast between the aged, dark wood of this historic beam and the bright, unfinished cedar (杉材) from Gifu Prefecture used on the ceilings creates a striking and harmonious aesthetic. The flooring throughout features solid cherry birch (カバ桜の無垢材フローリング), adding warmth and natural beauty.
Attention to detail is evident in the custom carpentry. The staircase was crafted from chestnut wood (クリ材) that was originally part of the old entrance threshold (玄関マグサ), repurposed during the renovation of the entrance door. The interior of the entranceway itself makes extensive use of locally sourced cypress (ヒノキ材), resulting in a bright and welcoming space with a warm ambiance. Additional features include a built-in seat in the genkan entrance area and a dedicated washbasin and vanity area.
