A Unique Home on Nishigami Island
Nestled at the end of a charming, narrow lane reminiscent of Onomichi's sloping streets, this 70-year-old folk house on Nishigami Island presents a fascinating layout. The property features two distinct sections connected by entrances facing each other. The left wing is a traditional wooden structure with a spacious entrance and hallway that evoke the feel of a Japanese inn, while the right wing, partially concrete, consolidates the kitchen, bath, and toilet facilities, and includes an external staircase leading to a rooftop with sea views.
The house, vacant for only a short period, is reportedly in livable condition, though it shows signs of age including some broken windows and evidence of past water leakage. The main structure and roof appear sound, making it a candidate for gradual, DIY repairs. A significant advantage is the modern flush toilet.
The island of Nishigami, part of the Kutsuna Islands in Ehime Prefecture, has seen its population dwindle to around 50 people. Historically sustained by citrus farming and a strong fishing industry, the island now offers a very quiet lifestyle, though its conveniences have diminished with the population decline. The closest major landmark is the city of Matsuyama, famous for its historic Dogo Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot spring resorts, located on the main island of Shikoku.
