A Curious Layout in the Kutsuna Islands
Nestled at the end of a charming, narrow lane reminiscent of Onomichi's sloping streets, this 70-year-old kominka on Nijima Island presents a uniquely intriguing layout. The single-story home features two distinct wings, each with its own entrance, facing one another. The left wing is a classic wooden Japanese structure with a spacious entrance and hallway, evoking the feel of a traditional inn. The right wing, partially concrete, consolidates all wet areas, including the kitchen and bath, and offers rooftop access with sea views.
The house, vacant for only a short period, is reportedly habitable immediately, though it shows signs of age like broken glass and potential water stains. The main structure and roof appear sound, making it a candidate for gradual, DIY restoration. A significant advantage is the installed flush toilet.
The island of Nijima, part of the Kutsuna Islands in Ehime Prefecture, has seen its population decline to around 50 people. The Seto Inland Sea National Park, Japan's first national park established in 1934, encompasses these islands, offering stunning coastal scenery. The closest major landmark is the historic Matsuyama Castle, located in the prefectural capital on the main island of Shikoku.
